An 8-year-old boy, who was hit with a hammer by his mother’s ex-boyfriend last week in Sacramento, died Wednesday at the hospital, according to authorities.
Last September 1 at 6:25am, Sacramento Police Department agents responded to a call at a residence by a call that reported a violent attack. When they arrived, they discovered a 7-year-old girl, an 8-year-old girl and a woman who had been beaten with a hammer by a man: it was the ex-wife of the victim and mother of the two little ones.
All three were taken to the nearest hospital under critical conditions. The wounds they sustained caused one of the two children to die five days later.
The investigators began a search for evidence from the moment they attended the scene and contacted potential witnesses to find the whereabouts of the attacker, identified as Deandre Chaney Jr., 23. The next day, the suspect was arrested by authorities in the state of Nevada.
The detectives suspect that the attack was unleashed of a verbal altercation between Chaney and the woman, who were in a sentimental relation previously. After attacking her and her children, the man stole the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene.
The attacker is not unknown to law enforcement officers, as he has a violent record.
Lena Sánchez, a neighbor of the victims, who was present when the agents arrived to attend the emergency, told local media KCRA3 that one of the children was taken to the ambulance because the other apparently ran into another neighbor’s house.
The Sacramento Police Department extended its thanks to the Winnemucca Police, who managed to capture the attacker through the help of the community that participated in the location of the subject.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of these victims and our agents who investigated this tragedy,” said the communiqué of the unit.
